Rainbows

Rainbows appear in the sky when there is bright sunlight and rain. Sunlight is actually made of several colors. When the sun's rays enters a raindrop, the raindrop acts like a mirror. The rays bend and scatter the light to form a rainbow.

You can only see a rainbow if the sun is behind you and the rain in front. You can even make your own rainbow with a garden hose or water sprinkler on a sunny day. The longest lasting rainbow was in North Wales, and it lasted over 3 hours.

Sometimes there is another faint rainbow outside the main one. In the second one, the colors are reversed where blue is on the outside and red is on the inside. If you click on this picture, you will see a reversed second rainbow to the left of the main one.
