All types of radiation from the Sun are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Radiation travels in electromagnetic waves. The waves are called electromagnetic because the energy has both magnetic and electrical properties. The spectrum usually is divided into seven types of radiation: radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma-ray radiation. Different types have different frequencies of waves. Whether the frequency is high or low, all electromagnetic waves travel at 300,000,000 meters per second. The characteristics of each type of radiation are described below. Radio waves Microwaves Infrared radiation Visible radiation Ultraviolet radiation X-ray radiation Gamma-ray radiation |

There are many different types of energy that come from the Sun. All of the types of energy travel in waves with different wavelengths (the distance between wave tops). All types of energy are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The energy is called electromagnetic because the waves have electrical and magnetic features. The spectrum usually is divided into these seven parts: Radio waves Microwaves Infrared radiation Visible radiation Ultraviolet radiation X-ray radiation Gamma-ray radiation |
