A Guide Book to Windows to the Universe

Windows to the Universe provides users loads of information and graphics about the Earth and Space Sciences. This includes not only scientific content, but also information about the artistic, historical, and cultural connections between science and our lives. To get a visual idea of the content within Windows, check out the Windows to the Universe Museum Floor Plan. If you're patient, you might also want to look at some quicktime animations: you can enter the museum and then check it out from the inside. The museum is a 3D model that illustrates the contents of the site -- check out a preliminary rendering of the model to get an idea where we're going with this. You can also use the Table of Contents to get an idea of the material included within this site and to navigate.

The content within the site is developed at three different levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Once a level is selected, navigation panels are provided for the user to select topics of interest. The main navigation panel allows the user to select between 10 different subject areas, to go straight to information about the planets using the clickable solar system image, or to get to the Table of Contents, Help, Search, or Comments information. Clicking on any of the subject areas or a planet will lead to another navigation panel, that further subdivides the available information on that subject.

Documents within the site use a standard format that includes an image (usually clickable to a full size version), text with hyperlinks, additional special links (indicated with a special button at the lower left) to movies, sound, or other relevant pages if available, and a navigation bar to other content areas within the site.

We also include pages in a "Tour" format, that restrict the use of hyperlinks outside of the tour, so that users can follow the concept being developed without being distracted elsewhere. On these pages, an oval navigation tool is provided for the user to move forward (F) or backward (B) in the tour, to go back to the start of Windows (Home), or to go back to select another tour (Start).

Because of the color scheme used on our site, color printers will print the yellow text on a white background, which can be very hard to read. If you need to print pages from the site, simply add "&col=white" to the URL (address) of any page, and reload. This will cause your pages to appear with black text on a white background.
