On this page you will find a list of selected SPA-related classroom activities that are available on the Web. We encourage you to check out the various sites listed on our Educational Resources pages for more classroom activities.
Auroras
Part of the "Auroras: Paintings in the Sky" web site. Focus is
on student projects including an idea for planning a trip to
view an
aurora.
Blackout!!!
Four activities adapted from the Event-Based Science Program.
Covers electricity and magnets, the magnetosphere and us,
sunspots and
solar activity and the electromagnetic spectrum.
Comparison Activity Looks at how big and hot the Sun is. Puts solar statistics into the practical realm. This
is a middle/high school activity.
Daytime Astronomy
"Astronomy with a Stick": activities for elementary
and middle school students that use shadows, sticks and
models to make
indirect observations of the Sun.
Hidden Picture Activity Looks at at the granulation of the Sun. This could be an elementary or middle school activity.
Magnetometer
Part of "Windows to the Universe" web site. Students build
their own magnetometer and then use it to learn about the
Earth's
magnetic field and magnetic fields of other celestial bodies.
This is a
middle/high school level activity.
Motion of a CME
Has students calculate the velocity and acceleration of
a CME based on SOHO images. This is a high school activity.
Observing the Sun This gives detailed directions on how to observe the Sun, including sunpots and solar eclipses. This could be an elementary, middle or high school activity.
Our Sun
Part of "NASA's Observatorium". Includes activities, links and a
quiz related to the Sun. This is a high school activity.
Paper Magnetosphere
Allows students to print and then cut out and fold
their own magnetometer. This is a middle/high school
activity.
Plotting Sunspots
Part of "Windows to the Universe" web site. Enables
students to learn how to plot sunspots and grow in
understanding of what
sunspots are. Could be used for middle/high school/college
level.
Shadows
Part of "Windows to the Universe" web site. Students measure
length of meter stick's shadow at different times of the day (or
seasons). This could be used in the middle or high school level.
The Singing Sun This site is devoted to helioseismology. It would give students a good place to start researching the topic. This could be a middle or high school site.
Solar Events
Part of NOAA's web site. Has students look at solar events
and how they affect life here on Earth. High school activity.
Solarscapes
Developed by the Space Science Institute in Colorado,
Solarscapes is a unit for middle school level that looks at
sunspots and
the Sun's rotation. Solarscapes was built with the Standards in
mind.
The Spinning Sun
Students answer the question "Does the Sun Spin?" This
is a middle/high school activity.
Sun and Weather
An activity on reading a thermometer and then seeing how
the Sun affects our measured temperatures here on Earth. This is a middle school activity.
Sun-Centered Physics
Four lessons for grades 11 & 12 that unify many
themes from the physical and Earth/space sciences.
Sunspot Cycles
Part of "Windows to the Universe" web site. Students
determine patterns in sunspot numbers. After determining
these
sunspot cycles, students make predictions into the near future. This is a middle school or high school activity.
Tracking an Active Region
Part of "Windows to the Universe" web site.
Students will be able to plot the location of a single active
region for
12 days as it moves across the face of the Sun. This is a middle school or high school activity.
