David Hilmers

David Hilmers is an American astronaut who was born on January 28, 1950, in Iowa. Before he became an astronaut, Hilmers was a Marine pilot. He has flown over 1000 hours in several aircraft.

Hilmers became an astronaut in 1980. He has spent over 493 hours in space on four spaceflights.

Hilmer made his first spaceflight aboard Mission 51-J in 1985. This was the first flight of space shuttle Atlantis. In 1988, he helped put a satellite into orbit during STS-26.

In 1990, Hilmers flew aboard STS-36. He made his last flight in 1992, aboard STS-42. This was the first flight of the International Microgravity Spacelab.
