James Irwin

James Irwin was an American astronaut who was born on March 17, 1930, in Pennsylvania. Before he became an astronaut, Irwin served as a fighter pilot for the Air Force.

James Irwin became an astronaut in 1963. He has spent over 295 hours in space on one spaceflight. In 1971, Irwin travelled to the moon aboard Apollo 15. Irwin and fellow astronauts explored the lunar surface with the first lunar rover.

Irwin left NASA in 1972. He died of a heart attack in 1991.
