Mae Jemison

Mae Jemison is an American astronaut who was born on October 17, 1956, in Alabama. Before she became an astronaut, Jemison practiced medicine in Africa and California.

Jemison became an astronaut in 1987. She has spent over 240 hours in space on one spaceflight.

Jemison became the first African-American woman in space during STS-47 in 1992. During this 10-day mission, the crew performed several experiments on space manufacturing and medicine.
