Lovell made his first spaceflight in 1965, aboard Gemini 7. His second flight was made aboard Gemini 12 in 1966. In 1968, Lovell piloted man's first flight to the moon, Apollo 8.
Lovell made his last spaceflight aboard the unlucky Apollo 13 in 1970. Apollo 13 was the first deep space abort mission. An explosion aboard the service module forced the crew to use the lunar module as a lifeboat. The crew returned safely to Earth.
