Ken Mattingly

Ken Mattingly was an American astronaut who was born on March 17, 1936, in Illinois. Before he became an astronaut, Mattingly was a Navy pilot.

Mattingly became an astronaut in 1966. He has spent over 509 hours in space on three spaceflights.

Mattingly made his first spaceflight in 1972, aboard Apollo 16. He piloted the command module while his fellow astronauts explored the surface of the moon. In 1982, Mattingly commanded STS-4. This was the fourth flight test of the newly designed space shuttle. Mattingly made his last spaceflight aboard Mission 51-C in 1985.
