Basic Facts About the Aurora

What Controls the Location of the Auroral Oval

The direction and strength of the solar wind magnetic field controls the tilt and size of the auroral oval. When the magnetic field in the solar wind is strong and southward in direction, the most energy is transmitted to the Earth's magnetosphere. The auroral oval in this case expands equatorward and intense auroral displays are seen.
