Coronal Mass Ejections

NASA's proposed Solar Stereo Mission.

  • The idea behind the Solar Stereo Mission is to move away from our traditional vantage point near the Earth and study the Sun with a cluster of telescopes (including coronagraphs, xray and EUV imagers) at several locations simultaneously.
  • This data would be combined with magnetograms and other data from ground-based or low-Earth-orbit instruments.
  • With this configuration of instruments, both the buildup of magnetic energy and the liftoff and trajectory of Earth-bound CMEs could be studied in 3 dimensions.
