Sonny Carter

Manley "Sonny" Carter was an American astronaut who was born on August 15, 1947 in Georgia. Before he became an astronaut, Carter was a Navy flight surgeon and a soccer player for the North American Soccer league.

Carr became an astronaut in 1984. He spent over 120 hours in space on one space flight.

In 1989, Carter flew aboard STS-33. This was a Department of Defense mission. In 1991, Carter was tragically killed in a commuter aircraft crash in Georgia. The plane crashed two miles short of the runway on its descent, killing all 23 people aboard.
