Mary Cleave was an American astronaut who was born on February 5, 1947 in New York. Before she became an astronaut, Cleave was a civil engineer.
Cleave became an astronaut in 1980. She has spent over 262 hours in space on 2 spaceflights.
In 1985, Cleave flew aboard space shuttle Atlantis. She tested space construction techniques using a remote manipulator arm on the shuttle. Cleave flew aboard STS-30 in 1989. During this mission, the crew deployed the Magellan Venus space probe.
