Frederick Gregory

Frederick Gregory is an American astronaut who was born on January 7, 1941, in Washington DC. Before he became an astronaut, Gregory was a helicopter rescue pilot during the Vietnam War. He has logged over 6500 hours of flight time in 50 types of aircraft.

Gregory became an astronaut in 1979. He has spent over 456 hours in space on 3 spaceflights.

Gregory made his first flight aboard Spacelab 3 in 1985. The crew performed several experiments during this mission. In 1989, Gregory became the first African-American Shuttle commander aboard STS-33. His crew deployed a Department of Defense satellite. Gregory made his last flight in 1991 aboard STS-44.
