Stanley Griggs

Stanley Griggs is an American astronaut who was born on September 7, 1939, in Oregon. Before he became an astronaut, Griggs was a test pilot for the Navy. He has logged over 9500 hours of flight time in 45 types of aircraft.

Griggs became an astronaut in 1970. He has spent over 148 hours in space on one spaceflight. In 1985, Griggs took the first unscheduled spacewalk in the American space program during Mission 51-D. He attempted to activate a faulty satellite during the spacewalk.

Griggs was killed in an airplane crash in 1989.
