Arnaldo Tamayo-Mendez

Arnaldo Tamayo-Mendez is an cosmonaut who was born on January 29, 1942, in Cuba. Before he became an cosmonaut, Tamayo-Mendez was a pilot for the Soviet Union.

Tamayo-Mendez became an cosmonaut in 1978. He became the first Hispanic and the first person of African heritage in space when he flew aboard Soyuz 38 in 1980. He spent 8 days aboard the Salyut 6 space station.
